Defence ministers of European Union countries will discuss the situation in Gabon, said the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, on Wednesday, adding that if confirmed, a coup would create further instability in the region, Reuters reports.
A group of high-ranking Gabonese military officers appeared on national television in the early hours of Wednesday, stating that they have seized power, following the announcement by the state electoral body that President Ali Bongo has won a third term.
– If this is confirmed, it is yet another military coup that exacerbates instability throughout the region – said Borrell, speaking at the EU Defence Ministers meeting in Toledo.
– The entire area, starting from the Central African Republic, Mali, Burkina Faso, now Niger, and possibly Gabon, is in a very difficult situation, and certainly ministers… must deeply consider what is happening there and how we can improve our policies towards these countries – he said.

– This is a major concern for Europe,” he added.
The signs of a coup in Gabon come just weeks after members of the presidential guard in Niger seized power and established a junta.
